Despite recent progress, child mortality and nutritional standards for the poorest Moroccans remain substantially below the average. Outside the cities, access to primary health care is poor, with the result that people depend on traditional remedies for illnesses. All employees are required to contribute to a social welfare fund, which operates a system of benefits in the event of illness, occupational accidents, and old age.
