Five international organizations: ACS Caricom Comm OAS OECS

St. Lucia took a leading role in 1999 in the unsuccessful campaign to preserve preferential access to the EU market for bananas from the Windward Islands. Good relations with the UK and EU remain central, but it is feared that from 2006 the Caribbean will be unable to compete with cheaper fruit from US-owned growers in Latin America. St. Lucia is active in the OECS and hosts the regional secretariat. It also supports Japan, an aid donor, in its bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
