AT THE LAST ELECTION

St. Lucian politics was long dominated by personalities, particularly John Compton of the conservative UWP. The election victory in 1997 of the SLP, led by Kenny Anthony, ending 15 years of UWP government, saw a shift in the political climate. Divided and factionalized, the UWP was unable to prevent the SLP's reelection in 2001.
