The media were strictly controlled under Saddam Hussein; his own son Uday was in charge of two major newspapers. The 2003 war was covered by the international media in unprecedented detail. Journalists were even "embedded" with invading troops. In the war's aftermath a flurry of new newspapers, most controlled by aspiring political and social groups, emerged in Baghdad.
