CONSUMPTION AND SPENDING

Honduran society is characterized by great inequalities: the richest 5% own two-thirds of the land. As many as 85% of the population were thrown into poverty in 1998 by Hurricane Mitch. Some 45% are still existing on less than $2 a day.
