THE EDUCATION SYSTEM
The education system

Compulsory education, introduced in 1921, lasts from seven to 16 years of age. The comprehensive system dates from the 1970s. Almost all children receive preschool education and also go on to three years of upper secondary education. Tough examinations mean that only around 40% of entrants qualify to attend one of the 20 universities. There are also 25 polytechnics.
