Cape Verde wishes to diversify its international contacts to secure aid and foreign investment, while maintaining good relations with Portugal. Regionally, it has improved relations with Guinea-Bissau, after withdrawing from a proposed union in 1980. Ties to other lusophone countries are important, including Angola and Brazil, as are links with "neighboring" Senegal and Gambia.
