Aid trend: Up 19% in 2002

Aid finances almost all development in Cape Verde, which is one of the least industrialized countries in the world and is vulnerable to food shortages. The World Bank is the main source of aid followed by Portugal. Remittances from Cape Verdeans abroad account for 20% of GDP. The AfDB loaned $8 million in 2002 to finance an environment and food security project.
