No compulsory military service

Annual defense budget: US$7.77bn

Defense spending trend: Down 7% in 2002

Canada cooperates closely with the US on North American defense and security issues.

Defense spending was cut after the end of the Cold War. Recently the government has come under pressure to reinvest in the increasingly run-down armed forces. The focus of planning is now the creation of rapid reaction forces. Canadian troops have served in many UN peacekeeping operations, most recently in Kosovo, East Timor, and Sierra Leone. Their involvement in Somalia, however, which ended in 1993, was tarnished by a scandal over racism, torture, and murder which shocked Canadian society.
