Main languages spoken: Azeri, Russian The Azeris are a Shi'a Muslim people with close ethnic links to the Turks. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the violence of the 1990s, Orthodox Christian Armenians and Russians accounted for 11% of the population. Now ethnic Armenians are concentrated in the Nagorno Karabakh enclave and operate de facto independence.
