Main languages spoken: English, English patois Most of the population are descended from Africans, brought over between the 16th and 19th centuries. There are, in addition, a few Europeans and south Asians. Racial tension is rare. Some 4000–5000 Montserratians have been given shelter since the volcanic eruptions on Montserrat in the 1990s. Around 10% of the population are of Hispanic origin, mainly coming from the Dominican Republic. By Caribbean standards, wealth disparities are small. THE URBAN/RURAL POPULATION SPLIT
